County’s vital cog missing

Thursday 14th May 2009, 4:25PM BST.

cricket-ball4Shropshire will have to do without key allrounder Duncan Catterall for Sunday’s crunch MCCA Trophy group clash with Cheshire at Wem.

Ombersley man Catterall is unavailable for the game, so the selectors have turned to Shifnal skipper Adam Shimmons to fill the gap.

Just one other change is made to the squad that beat Cumberland last week, with Ted Bayliss coming in for Matt Tilt.

St Georges man Tilt had been due to play at Cumberland, but dislocated a finger in the Dragons’ Birmingham League division two game at Old Elizabethans the day before.

He has still not recovered from that injury, so Anthony Parker will once again don the wicketkeeper’s gloves against Cheshire.

Shropshire have won one and lost one so far, having fallen to Bedfordshire in their first fixture of the season at Shrewsbury.

So their prospects of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition could hang on how they perform at Wem’s Kynaston Ground.

“We’ll do the best we can,” said chairman of selectors Peter Bradley.

“It’s all still in the melting pot, but after this weekend’s round of matches I think it will be a lot clearer as to who is going through.

“We missed out on run-rate last year and it could be that close again, so we have to go and be positive.”

Squad: James Ralph (Kidderminster, captain), Ed Foster (Shrewsbury), Jono Whitney (Bridgnorth), Andy Gray (Walsall), Atiq Chishti (Knowle & Dorridge), Anthony Parker (Shifnal), Steve Taylor (St Georges), Jack Shantry (Walsall), Adam Shimmons (Shifnal), Richard Oliver (Whitchurch), Ted Bayliss (Kidderminster), Michael Barnard (Shrewsbury).
