Chambers set for waiting game
Thursday 14th May 2009, 4:28PM BST.
Larry Chambers is ready to play the waiting game in order to bring the right players to AFC Telford United over the summer.
Assistant manager Chambers admits changes will take place as the club looks to bounce back from their Blue Square North play-off defeat at Gateshead last week.
He will meet with boss Rob Smith over the next few days to decide on the future of their current playing squad, but will not rush to bring in new recruits.
“I think we can afford to wait a bit this year because there’s going to be a lot of players about,” said Chambers.
“We’ve seen quotes that there are going to be 700 players available so we will have to pick through all that carefully.
“In the past we have done our business early doors in the summer, but I don’t know if that will be the case this time.
“The world’s changing – last year we had to snap players up straight away to get the ones we wanted, but this year there’s going to be less money about.”
Meanwhile, Chambers insists he is starting to look forward again as he bids to draw a line under the events of last Friday.
Telford lost 1-0 at Gateshead to miss out on promotion to the Blue Square Premier, but the Bucks’ assistant manager is taking a pragmatic view.
“I’m certainly not depressed,” he said.
“Depression is a strong word and there’s people with no homes or no jobs out there who are far worse off than us.
“I’m disappointed with how it ended, but that’s football and I’m sensible enough to realise that things can’t go your way every time.
“We gave it a good go and it’s been a good season, but it didn’t feel that way at 10pm last Friday.”
l Tickets have nearly all sold out for Saturday’s annual presentation awards evening, being held at the New Bucks Head.
Remaining tickets are available at £25 each from the club office or by calling 01952-640064.
