Vodafone told no over mast

Controversial applications by Vodafone for two mobile phone masts in Shrewsbury have been thrown out by councillors.
Critics feared the poles would be an eyesore and might pose a threat to the health of nearby residents.
The telecommunications poles, which would have been 10 metres high with antennae and an equipment cabinet at street level, were earmarked for the junction of Clive Road and Monkmoor Road and the roundabout at Racecourse Road.
But Shropshire Council’s interim regulatory committee refused both proposals, which were prior notification applications before any full plans were drawn up.
Councillor Miles Kenny spoke out against the Monkmoor Road application.
He said: “I think this application should be refused on the grounds that it will be very intrusive and would clutter up an existing open view.
“The health aspect is very important too. State of mind is a material consideration.
“There is evidence to suggest phone masts can be hazardous. It will be hazardous to traffic too as a distraction.”
Councillor Liz Parsons spoke about the Monkmoor site, claiming a mast would harm the appearance of a residential street.
She said: “At the moment it is a very attractive area in front of the police station which the pole would spoil.”
