Traders’ parking rift with council

A war of words has broken out between the town council and businesses in Oswestry over last Christmas’s free parking arrangements.
The council says it is “disappointed” it is still waiting to hear from Oswestry’s Chamber of Commerce five months later as to whether the scheme was successful.
Retiring mayor Gareth Jones said told councillors this week the lack of feedback could affect future regeneration plans.
But chamber of commerce chairman Yossi Gliksman said it was impossible to gauge how successful the free parking had been because the recession had affected trading figures.
He said was “appalled” by the criticism as the chamber tried to help traders to beat the downturn.
Mr Jones said: “Despite this council providing six free car parking days in the build-up to Christmas at a cost in the region of £12,000, we are still seeking the success, or otherwise, of that venture and the impact it made upon local trade.”
After the meeting Mr Jones added: “Despite making the agreement in a very short timeframe there has been no feedback whatsoever. Clearly if the council is to repeat this incentive in the future we need to know whether it was successful.”
Mr Gliksman said: “We can’t compare the figures because it was the first Christmas after the recession hit so it would be pointless to compare them with the previous year.”
