Almost 4,000 tickets have been snapped up for Shrewsbury Town’s Wembley final against Gillingham, with the club today revealing that it expects its allocation to sell out.

Eager fans queued outside the club’s Prostar Stadium from as early as 5.40am today to secure the best seats in the house for the team’s play-off final.

Ian Whitfield, media manager for Shrewsbury Town, said that at lunchtime ticket sales were going well.

He said: “Just under 4,000 tickets have been sold which includes online, by telephone and in person. We would expect our allocation to sell out.”

Shrewsbury had 21,000 tickets, compared with 38,000 given to Gillingham. Today was the first time people were able to get their tickets in person for the crunch final on May 23.

Paul Bowdler, 50, was first in the queue with friend Bill Rennie, 51, of Harlescott, Shrewsbury. Season ticket holder Mr Bowdler, of Radbrook, Shrewsbury, said he had bought tickets for 26 adults and eight children at a cost of £1,080.

He said: “I went to Bury away and to Wembley the last time around and hopefully this time they can make it third time lucky.”

Dave Knott, 43, of Sutton Park, Shrewsbury, queued at 6am to buy tickets for 22 adults, 10 children and three OAPs.

Club general manager Jon Harris said he was delighted with the response from fans.

The Ticketzone hotline 0844 8444410 give season ticket and Sovereign Club holders a chance to buy their tickets until 7pm tomorrow.
