County MP ‘careful on costs’
Wednesday 13th May 2009, 3:41PM BST.
Shropshire MP Daniel Kawczynski today said he was happy to discuss his expenses claims with constituents following allegations of a “systematic abuse” of the rules by some MPs.
The Conservative MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham , who gave up his London flat last summer in a personal gesture designed to open his own expenses to public view, said: “I and my staff – we are incredibly careful.
“We spend money carefully and appropriately on behalf of my constituents in providing a good service for them.”
Mr Kawczynski pays £94 to stay at a London club for the nights he spends away from his constituency, at a cost of about £10,000 per year.
The maximum second home allowance available to MPs is £24,000.
He moved after the Commons rejected his proposal for MPs to stay in a university-style halls of residence in London to cut costs.
Mr Kawczynski said: “I am personally happy to discuss the expenses I claim with any constituents and show them all of my expenses. I have personally never bought an apartment with taxpayers’ money.
“I have calculated all the options – buying, renting a flat or staying at a hotel – and I have found the best value for money is staying in a hotel.”
Mr Kawczynski welcomed Tory leader David Cameron’s action to set up a new scrutiny panel to assess all “excessive” expenses claims by Conservative MPs, and where necessary order them to be repaid.
He said Mr Cameron had shown “great leadership” on the issue.

One honest MP in a pool of greedy, dishonest MP’s – Give that man a round of applause, lets have more like him please.

shame no one is going to vote for you or your mates then is’nt daniel!!!!

Do you think that as some of our mp’s are returning their expense money it should be given back to the taxpayers.
After all whilst we are in a credit crunch and all feeling the pinch it is somewhat taking the mickey to claim for swimming pools, moats and even court summonses for unpaid council tax.Lets have a countrywide poll and see what the real feelings are.

The total expenses for Shropshire MPs in 2007/08 reads, Kawczynski,Daniel (£156,737), Wright,David (£154,848), Pritchard, Mark (£161,827), Paterson, Owen (£164,297), Dunne Philip (£134,183). It’s time to forget misguided party loyalties and vote them all out. I would like to see a system in which MP’s can only sit two (5 year) terms, and remove the career politicians. There should be no such thing as a “safe seat”. I expect that despite the complaining, the British public will return most of the MPs who lead the expenses claims. Don’t be fooled by the propaganda, there is no such thing as a wasted vote, unless it is for the main parties. Dr Richard Taylor MP (Wyre Forest) showed the way.
come on then danny boy come clean and show us your expense claims – why waait til the Tory graph publishes them – a good MP would put them in the local press – i challenge you mr kawzynski as i pay your wages – show me where your claims go
Report abuse
I agree – publish all your claims and copies of your receipts – also tell us about whether you made any money out of your flat,
If they are all justifiable and careful there shouldn’t be much problem.
this shows the difference between us and them
we are more or less clean, certainly daniel has lead by example on this issue, and david cameron is the only leader not to have big claims, unlike brown and his cleaner and clegg and his mortgage we are the natural party of government and thus we know how to do things like this properly
when we take charge, we will slash MPs perks to help cut taxes on businesses and married couples, we will get rid of waste and cut taxes and get out of the EU, god save the Queen

Hmm… Looks like somebody is trying to draw attention away from the fact that he claimed £156,737 in allowances for the year 07/08
For those of you who want the facts without the MPs spin:
2007/08 Total MP Allowances Claimed (Source BBC)
Daniel Kawczynski £156,737
Mark Pritcard £161,827
David Wright £154,848
How embarassing for Kawczynski and Pritchard it seems both have been spending more than our local labourite MP!
It is extraordinary is it not that no less than 92 MP’s of all parties the length & breadth of the UK have today told their local press that they are happy to discuss claims with constituents following allegations of a “systematic abuse”. They all go on to say that they are along with their staff “incredibly careful.” “We spend money carefully and appropriately on behalf of our constituents in providing a good service for them.”?

Agree with Robin print them in the Star Danny?

have you not read what ‘danny boy’ has just said?! as you pay his wages, Give him a call!
Hats off to him, he’s always fighting our towns many causes, and to do so with an open door policy is setting the standard. I for one say well done and keep up the good and honest work
Report abuse
according to the BBC website in 2007-2008 he claimed nearly £157,000 in allowances, including for a second home,
many MPs claimed far less than he did.
Another example of says one thing and does something else.
On the gravy train with the rest of them, time he was voted out.

Hats off to Danny if he is completely honest with his constituents.Or is he?
The problem is that people do not believe political answers anymore as they all attend the same clubs and answer questions with questions.or do they? who knows now?
I would vote if I believed them,or do I?
Lets face it if I defaulted on my council tax I would be locked up,and not able to pay it on expenses.Or would I?
i dont believe him
10 k per annum for digs is not good value for money – even in london you can rent a flat for £500 a month, thats only £6k per annum
He is living in luxury at the tax payers expense
we should put them in 1 bed council house flats that is all they deserve / need

Asif, being a regular stayer in London, I would be obliged if you would put me onto some decent accomodation within reasonable distance of Charing Cross for £500 pm. I don’t wish to have a rat infested, tumbledown flea-pit next door to dossers – forgive me you are talking twaddle.
What we must not forget in this uproar, is also the abuse of employing relatives, ie Jaqui Smith (Labour Redditch) who employs her husband for £40,000 pa and many more like her. Also the Labour ploy of giving all MPs a £10,000pa “Communications Allowance” for spreading propaganda within their constituencies. This was voted through by Brown and co to assist those Labour MPs in marginal seats (though all get it) to spread the gospel and to give them cash to consolidate their positions.
The whole system needs looking at – not just the ACA. They insult us all.

Solution – Government buys a 300 room hotel in London with taxpayers all MPs 2nd homes are sold to fund this hotel.
Mp’s stay in this hotel when they are in London – It will reduce costs on security as well.
Rooms should be travel lodge style with bedroom, bathroom, and desk and chair.
Problem solved.

Toryboy
More or less clean how about Elliot Morley?
I think the Tories are coming out of this worse than Labour at the moment, and as for Mr Kawczynski I hardly think £156,737 (which is more than David Wright) is leading by example.
As for your comment on Europe I take it you are aware of Mr Cameron’s policies (or lack of) on Europe.
You poor deluded fool!
£157k seems an awful lot to me, but Labour must lose Shrewsbury or they will secure another Commons majority. People can safely vote Tory to stop them without giving Cameron his own majority, whereas in Telford a Tory vote is too risky. A win there probably means a Tory Commons majority, so in Telford Labour must be supported to stop them.

Readers, take a close look at the first line of Serotonins comment at 16. This say’s it all and we are expected to take seriously anything else that is said by this Labour apologist.
Just in case there is anyone else of the same advanced political knowledge as Serotonin, for information Elliot Morly is a long serving member of the LABOUR PARTY and is presently MP for Scunthorpe – though for how much longer depends on the non leadership, prevarication and pussyfooting around by Gordon Brown.
Had he really been a Tory MP as Serotonin seems to think he was, he would have been out on his ear within hours of his claims coming to public knowledge.
No party is coming out “good” at present Serotonin, though if it’s a case of £ for £ which is I know, a ridiculous argument, the Tories are left in the shade by Labour who don’t believe in fiddling expences by half measures, they go the whole hog.
I would ask who should hold their hands up to your last ill judged comment, yourself or Toryboy.

if he was so careful with costs why do i constantly get junk mail from him! Im supposed to be subscribed to the mailing opt out list with the royal mail for junk mail but i always get leaflets, surveys and magazines from the MP, paid for by the tax payer on glossy shiny colour paper
thats a waste of money and trees

Come on Danny, you have a web site and are only to keen to tell us all sorts of things you have an opinion on, publish your expenses. Tell us which ‘club’ you stay at and what get in addition to a bed for a night at that club. Also tell us what you claimed for at the flat you used to have – if you were as careful as you say it won’t be to much trouble to demonstrate your ‘value for money’ credentials

I think Serotonin meant Andrew MacKay and his wife? I do wonder how many people who found themselves in a job were they could fleece the expenses system would resist especially seeing so many others getting away with it?
Stuart – Yes, my mistake I did mean Andrew McCay – I was making the point that MP’s from all parties were involved, in contrast to Tory boys deluded “Clean” statement.
I also hardly see how my comments make me a Labour apologist (I’ve never actually voted for Blair or Brown). Perhaps you should actually read my comments? Maybe the reality is that it is you that is an apologist for the Tories?
I do however accept that things look far worse for Labour since my initial comment – then again it is a Tory rag reporting these stories!

Capt Chaos
An interesting comment, minor fiddling of expenses (ie rounding up of travel expenses) is hardly unusual in Britain. Strange then that their is so much hostility towards MPs. I suppose that the British people are saying – You are supposed to be better than us?
I am still of the personal opinion that this problem has been created because MP’s are not paid a fair wage for their job and are compelled to supplement this through expense claims. Unfortunately any increase is always going to be difficult as the UK media have portrayed our MPs as dishonest scroungers for so long the public are up in arms every time that MP’s wages are discussed.
I wonder if the self righteous Telegraph journalists will make their expenses claims available for public perusal?

It amazes me anyone can talk up the Labour disaster!
Then again, welcome to mediocre Britain

its funny…….. the tories and labour really think the public are going to vote for them in the june elections…….
wake up of course we’re not because you all lie waste the taxpayers money and cant be trusted.
maybe its time for a revolution!!!!!

Stuart,
Whilst I agree that no party is coming out of this well, I think perhaps you’re overlooking Andrew Mackay and his wife, the truly awful Julie Kirkbride. Both have apparently been claiming one each of their two homes as a ‘second’ home.
There’s also Francis Maude, whose ‘second’ home is but a four and a half minute walk from his ‘first’ home…

will daniel k mp be so brave as to follow his labour colleagues lead ?

Capt Chaos, my wife made exactly the same point to me at lunchtime today so I made the following point to her.
“We paid off our mortgage in 1996, prior to that, I received help with my mortgage payments, do you think we would have gone on claiming for mortgage help after we had paid it off – for 18 months, to a total cost of £16,000″. My wife replied, “of course not”, that sums it up, we are two normal, decent – not rich pensioners, we would not have done it, neither would millions of others, probably the greater majority of the population but this is exactly what Elliot Morley, MP did.
If I had done this in my job, it would have meant instant dismissal with the Police knocking on my door a few hours later.
Why are MPs any different?
the thatcher thrift values still permeate our party and many of us like me are small business owners and know how to watch every penny
Report abuse
Peter,
Yes, quite agree, the Mackays have done much that is wrong. I can name two Labour Ministers, (husband and wife) that have done equally as wrong, in fact there is another husband and wife team in a situation like the Mackays and Francis Maude combined. I won’t name these as the Star won’t publish anything that is only 1000% proved albeit the Telegraph will.
It is silly to compare parties in this, “all snouts together” disgrace but if you insist, we now have two Labour MPs claiming for non existent mortgages WE CANNOT GET WORSE THAN THAT. That by any standards is, (I won’t say it for fear of censorship) but imagine a benefit claimant lying about their circumstances, arrest, court then payback and in some cases, imprisonment. Remember the ex Mayor, a benefit claimant refereeing a football match and filmed whilst doing so -he got sent down.
Then we have the diabolical Tam Dalyell, the champion of the far left and shining star of the working class, father of the house and always on the high moral mountain – he merely claims £18,000 for bookcases, two months before he retires, enough said I think. Please stop trying to point score – ALL THE PARTIES HAVE BEEN PROVED TO BE “AT IT”.
I have ceased to be surprised, my major concern now is the question, what does this say for what purports to be our democracy. Certainly in the EU Elections and Local for that matter, the big parties are going to feel the draught with UKIP, BNP and Green’s picking up votes by the ton. I will be voting UKIP is only to put a boot up their proverbials.
