County chemical leak alert

Wednesday 13th May 2009, 12:00PM BST.

Leaking drums sparked a full-scale chemical alert in a lay-by beside a busy Shropshire road.

Part of the A53 was closed following the discovery near Hodnet at 3pm yesterday.

Police were called to inspect an abandoned lorry trailer in the northbound lay-by, near Epsley Roundabout, and found the former Tesco unit packed with 80 to 150 45-gallon drums, several of which were leaking.

Fire crews, Shropshire Council and the Environment Agency were called and the northbound carriageway was shut while crews tackled the incident.
