Stoke Heath improved, says report
Tuesday 12th May 2009, 10:25AM BST.
Shropshire’s young offenders institution has made “massive improvements” following a damning report 18 months ago which criticised the care of young offenders.
The latest report by the Chief Inspector of Prisons into Stoke Heath Young Offenders Institution, near Market Drayton, found the offenders now had better access to telephones, visits and showers, and were treated respectfully and decently by staff.
However, it identified areas still in need of improvement, claiming the procedure for new arrivals saw them stripped, searched and locked up in “grubby” and “uncomfortable” holding cells for too long.
The report, published today, comes 18 months after the last report, which criticised the institute in a number of areas.
Overall, today’s report says the site is performing “reasonably well” against all criteria, which includes keeping young people safe, treating them with decency, providing activity and resettlement into life outside prison.
Teresa Clarke, governor at Stoke Heath, said the institution had expanded its education provision so youths had more constructive things to do and relationships between staff and offenders had improved.

Excellent news which we should all celebrate.
To get a prison sentence these days takes a huge amount of effort to committ a number of crimes.
In committing the crimes you must give up your free time and be dedicated to making the lives of law abiding, tax paying, contributing citizens an absolute misery.
You must drive other peoples cars, enter other peoples houses, sell other people drugs or even batter other peoples bodies or damage their property.
When our “justice” system finally gives you your just rewards it is therefore only right that you should have nice showers, access to telephones and be treated respectfully and decently by the staff who are there to ensure you are warm, fed, and watered. As for being strip searched to prevent you taking drugs or weapons into your new hotel, or being held in “grubby” or “uncomfortable” holding cells – well – surely this be a breach of your human rights and you must be owed thousands in compensation.
Whoops – I must have been dreaming – surely this is a truly bad joke – these little dears who are allowed to destroy the lives of the decent folks should be locked up, whipped daily, fed bread and water and made to work for that.
I for one could not care less about the scum in our prisons – they deserve to suffer to make up for the suffering they have caused !!
Would you vote for me if I stood for parliament on a beat the criminal ticket??
I hear the expenses are quite good too!!

You have my vote there!
I’m sure that lovely gentleman who stole my friends car, only to use it to deal drugs and organise crime and thefts is having a lovely stress free time, with not a care in the world whilst we worry about how we are going to survive from day to day through this recession…
Well with the luxury of T.Vs in those comfy cells, they may even learn something from the likes of corry and eastenders….
Its a joke, maybe i can find somewhere to live-do you think severnside will allocate me with a cell??
what a JOKE

Dear Capt Cynical – have you ever been inside a prison for any length of time? Been with that many people for that length of time? The myth that all people who are imprisoned are all wasters just isn’t the case and they certainly don’t get to sit around and play on x-boxes. Please show a little compassion.
Well, today the prison had 5 members of staff sent to hospital because of inmates, sorry young adults fighting. So it’s clearly improved.

Dear Unbelievable – Have you ever been attacked, or been made the victim of one of these poor little dears? Do you think they show compassion when they’re doing these things? If they do the crime they have to do the time – so if they’re not wasters then what are they? Productive members of society? Hardly! Oh, and I don’t sit around playing on an x box all the time either – I’m too busy going out and working for a living, and having a nice time without hurting anyone or stealing/damaging other people’s property. It can be done, and maybe a spell in the cells will help them see this – but with all the nannying they get, I doubt that very much.

Unbelievable by name, unbelievable by nature.
Whatever you are on must be amazing stuff or your glasses must be truly rose tinted – if they are not wasters just what would you call them?
Perhaps you would like them to come round for tea and cakes, a group hug and some counselling so you can demonstrate your compassion – NO – I thought not!!

How does NO sound?

So they’re treated decently and respectfully by the staff are they? I wonder if the inmates treat the staff with the same respect? And as for grubby cells – can’t they be given their first task – cleaning them? It might give them some sense of pride in their surroundings. If everything is handed to them on a plate inside, what are they going to expect outside?

3 staff in hospital – others injured in trying to break up a fight at the much improved Stoke Heath.
Clearly the better facilities have not improved the inmates behaviour – let us hope the inspectors and report writers now hang their heads in shame having annoyed the tax payers and proved that for all the improvements in treatment and facilities stock heath is actually a prison full of criminals.
Stop the mamby pamby approach and we might actually sole the real problem – if you offend you suffer – therefore you learn and do not offend again – or if you do you get locked up permanently.
Zero tolerance and 3 strikes and your out does work – but you have to have guts to apply it – and that is what is sadly lacking these days!!
