School closure threatens area

Campaigners against a proposal to close a village school near Oswestry claimed today the plan would “decimate” the community.
Members of the Ysgol Pontfadog Save Our Community Schools (Socs) group issued the warning following the last of three public consultation meetings into the proposal yesterday.
Under the Wrexham Council proposals, Ysgol Pontfadog would close and Ysgol Cynddelw and Ysgol Llanarmon would be amalgamated. Members of Socs said, despite reassurances by council officers, they still believed the proposals would damage the education of children in the Ceiriog Valley.
Jools Payne, Socs chairman, said: “Closing Ysgol Pontfadog will decimate our small village and may just deal a fatal blow to the small businesses in that community.”
She said: “Crucially, we believe the education of all children in the valley will be compromised, not enhanced, by these plans.”
She said the group will take its concerns to Wrexham Council leader, Aled Roberts.
Gill Stevens, council spokeswoman, said: “Wrexham Council would welcome written responses to the consultation by June 12.”

Even allowing for the fact that English may not be their first language, I feel that the term “decimate” is probably a bit over the top – unless they really mean that it will lead to the death of one in ten of the local population?
