Makeover on cards for town market

Tuesday 12th May 2009, 12:13PM BST.

Top British designer Sir Terence Conran could soon be redesigning a Shropshire market.

Powis Hall in Oswestry, which houses the town’s indoor market, has been nominated for refurbishment in a national competition aimed at improving an important community public space.

The winner will have a refurbishment planned for it by Sir Terence, founder of retail chain Habitat.

Leading interior designer Tara Bernerd will also take part in the scheme.

The public can now vote for their winner in the competition run by The Times in conjunction with interior decoration firm mydeco.

Members of community group 0s21, which promotes the sustainable development of Oswestry, urged people to vote for Powis Hall.

Valentine Davis, group member, said: “I think it would be fantastic if the hall did win. The rules state you have to click on The Times website and look at the nominations and judge what you think should win, not simply just vote for your local one you want to win.

“We would urge people to have a look at the competition and vote if they feel Powis Hall should win.”

Powis Hall is owned by Oswestry Town Council and bosses welcomed the news the building was in the running for a makeover.

David Preston, council clerk, said: “Any publicity or promotion for the markets has got to be good news.”
