Telford’s Helen Forrest was the queen of the Shropshire Star Hole In One final.

Forrest walked away with the women’s prize when hitting a shot to 29 inches on the 140-yard second hole at Shrewsbury.

That was as close as anyone in the 29-strong field came to holing in one.

But Forrest had another near miss when she hit the flag on the sixth, only for the ball to ricochet to eight feet away.

“It was a great day and to win it is absolutely fantastic,” said Forrest, who has been captain at Telford on three occasions.

“It’s a unique competition and fantastic to be involved in. Hopefully I can get another hole-in-one next year and come back for the finals again.”

All the finalists had booked their place in the field by recording an ace in a club competition over the previous 12 months.

And home advantage proved crucial in the men’s event, with Shrewsbury’s Herb Farrage – who like Forrest is a 13-handicapper – hitting his tee shot at the 113-yard sixth to 98 inches.

“I came just to enjoy the day and with no expectations at all,” said Farrage, who used to be a member at Arscott.

“To win it just makes the day but it’s been about good company in a rally good competition.”

Shropshire & Herefordshire Union president John Jones paid tribute to the finalists and the Shropshire Star. “You have all achieved something I haven’t just by being here today because you have had a hole-in-one,” he said.

“But how terrific that the Shropshire Star backs this competition. They have been great supporters of Shropshire & Herefordshire golf for many years – and it is hugely appreciated.”
