Event is on despite roadworks
Tuesday 12th May 2009, 9:36AM BST.
Organisers of a Discovery Day on the Powys border are urging people to attend the event this weekend despite roadworks that look set to cause chaos for motorists.
The event at the Llanymynech Heritage Area is on Sunday – the same weekend contractors will resurface the A483 through the town. It will leave motorists facing a lengthy diversion via Shrewsbury.
Councillor Dilys Gaskill, one of the organisers of the event, said: “The A483 will be closed at Llanymynech Bridge for resurfacing on Saturday and Sunday.
“In some ways this will be good as the road will be quiet and no HGVs, but, on the other hand, our Discovery Day at the Heritage Area and around the canal runs from 1pm until 5pm.
“I do hope people will be able to find their way to our event. We have a lot to offer with boat trips, lime burning, guided walks, storytelling, music and song, craft stalls, steam engine, pond dipping, geology, barbecue, beer tent and real ice cream.
“It is also a free event. We just want people to come along and enjoy themselves, so mixed feelings about the road closure.”
The Welsh Assembly Government will resurface the A483 Llanymynech bridge and the road will close from 8.30am to 5pm. Powys County Council confirmed the official diversion route is from the Buttington roundabout at Welshpool on the A458 to Shrewsbury and then the A5 to Oswestry.
