police-lights2Police are seeking a lorry driver who overtook the car and caravan belonging to an 81-year-old man who died after he was hit on a busy Shropshire road.

The pensioner, from Cressage, near Shrewsbury, was carrying his belongings from a friend’s house to his car and touring caravan parked on the A41 at Woodcode, near Newport, when he was struck.

The incident happened just after 3am on Saturday when the man was struck by a Peugeot 206, which was travelling towards Newport.

Police in Telford are keen to trace lorry drivers who may have seen the incident – particularly a driver who overtook the caravan just before the accident and was travelling from Newport towards the M54.

The man, who suffered multiple serious injuries, was due to go on holiday and had parked at the side of the road, while he was going from one side of the road to the other to take property from a friend’s house to the caravan.

He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital but efforts by paramedics to save him failed.

Police in Telford are investigating the cause of the collision and are eager to trace hauliers using the road around the time of the collision. Sergeant Michael Waterworth, said: “We are eager to trace lorry drivers who were using the A41 through Newport at around 3am on Saturday.”
