Town did it the hard way

graham-coughlan2Town did it the hard way and made the fans sweat, but it was worth waiting for after they booked their place in the League Two Play-Off Final, writes blogger James Pugh.

We looked dead and buried after losing 1-0 at home on Thursday night, but yet again the players rose to the challenge of having to win away on Sunday in the return fixture.

A lot of people saw Bury as the favourites going into the tie, but over the two games they were no better than us and we fully merited going through. We also had a fighting spirit that couldn’t be matched, even when things went against us in the two games.

The penalty shootout brought back the memories of the Conference Play-Off Final against Aldershot and yet again we held our nerve with some well taken penalties and brilliant saves from Daniels.

Starting with Thursday’s game, I thought we played really well and were unlucky not to have scored after some bad misses by Holt and poor refereeing.

Bury’s goal came totally against the run of play, and although it was Ashton who scored the own goal I thought it was Daniels who was more to blame as his positioning again came into question, which it has done for much of the season.

However, Daniels more than made up for it on Sunday after he produced an unbelievable performance when nothing was going to get past him. I have questioned his commitment this season, but it was certainly evident in this match and we have a lot to thank him for.

Overall, it was a tight, even game and thankfully luck was on our side, which it hasn’t been for the latter half of the season.

Just a word on the Leslie sending off – I thought it was a shocking decision from the referee and didn’t think it was even a foul.

The momentum was with us at that point and the ref almost ruined things for us – instead we had to watch being as we were battered in extra time.

Hopefully we will appeal against the decision and it will be reversed because it would be a shame for a young lad to miss a final at Wembley.

Over the two games there were so many heroes to choose from, but a special mention has got to go again to the back four who have been terrific recently.

Fans need to keep their diary free for May 23, when Town will be playing Gillingham in the final. It is certainly a game we can win – we beat them 7-0 at home and drew 2-2 away this season, although these results won’t account for anything on the day.

Town have show recently they are up for the big challenge and hopefully it will be the same again in the final.

We should have a fully fit squad to choose from and players like Humphrey should enjoy the larger Wembley pitch.

We will also have Davies, who missed the final through injury two years ago.

To be honest I have seen Town play in League Two for too long now and we are unlikely to get a better opportunity than this to kick on and play better quality football and against better teams in League One.

I fancy a trip to Leeds, Southampton and Norwich next season.

My prediction in the final is 2-1 to the Town in 90 minutes with Holt and Davies with the goals.
