College is seeking firms for students

A Shropshire college fears it my not be able to provide apprenticeships for students unless more employees come forward to offer places.

Walford and North Shrophire College is the latest to be hit by the recession which it blames as it finds itself desperately short of work placements.

Businesses across Shropshire and mid Wales, in particular the motor industry and hairdressers, are being urged to consider taking on an apprentice to help young people start in their career.

Currently the college has around 125 apprentices who combine one day a week studies with four days a week working for a firm.

But Martin Moreton, work placement learning manager, said he was worried this year many young people would be left disappointed.

“I really do fear that we will not have enough placements when our young people become eligible to take up apprenticeships in July,” he said.

“We are desperate for placements in the motor vehicle department and hairdressing.”

“These schemes are not an easy option and those who apply are well motivated, keen learners who want a career in a particular vocational area. They all turn out to be highly employable and sought after people in the workforce.”

The college runs apprenticeship schemes in several land based subjects such as horticulture, animal care, gamekeeping and agricultural engineering as well as floristry childcare and health and social care.

The high unemployment is a factor .However course such as hair dressing etc are or have been so popular over the 7 years or so lets face it you can and only need so many hair dressers etc and the one already in place do not want new people setting up against them when qualified.
