Ashton vows to bounce back
Saturday 9th May 2009, 12:55PM BST.
Neil Ashton has pledged to bounce back from “the worst moment of my career” and help fire Shrewsbury Town to Wembley tomorrow.
The left-back suffered the agony of putting through his own net for the only goal of Thursday’s first leg to give Bury a slender advantage in tomorrow’s return at Gigg Lane (12noon).
Ashton admitted the disappointment was huge in the immediate aftermath to his costly mix-up with goalkeeper Luke Daniels.
But the Liverpudlian is now ready to make amends as Town attempt to turn the tie around.
“I think that was probably the worst moment of my career so far,” said the 24-year-old.
“It was such an important game and to make such a big mistake made for a really tough 12 hours after it.
“It was going through my head so many times and I think I had about three hours sleep Thursday night thinking about it.
“But it’s forgotten now. Everything is done and dusted – I’ve made the mistake and now it’s just time to get on with it.
Fingers crossed
“I’ve got the lads behind me and we are going to go right until the end.
“I’ve just got my fingers crossed the lads can help me through it.
“Hopefully I will play and I can prove what a good player I am, do the right things in the right way and maybe even get a goal myself at the right end.”
Ashton insists Town’s recent away form – they have won at Rotherham and Dagenham in the last two games on their travels – offers real hope that the dream of promotion to League One can be achieved.
“We are going for our third away win on a row which, before the Rotherham game, nobody would have dreamt of that,” he added.
“The game was never going to be won or lost on Thursday. We are still in the mix. We have got the players in there to win any game this season.
“It’s a big game, everyone is positive and we will be ready.”
Town have been hit by an injury worry ahead of the game.
Winger Chris Humphrey, who was substituted at half-time on Thursday night with a hamstring worry, could miss the game with the injury.
