Shrews keep Wembley dream alive

Friday 8th May 2009, 11:44AM BST.

sd3164160soccer-coca-col2Shrewsbury Town fans declared their team was down but not out as play-off rivals Bury drew first blood in the battle for promotion from League Two.

The Shrews lost last night’s semi-final first leg at the Prostar Stadium after an own goal from defender Neil Ashton just nine minutes from time.

A crowd of 8,400 created a carnival atmosphere at the ground in Oteley Road with the game also televised live on Sky.

But optimism is running so high among Town fans, despite Bury’s slender lead.

Indeed, mother and daughter Pat and Natalie Davies, of Minsterley, near Shrewsbury, are trying to book a place on a coach to Wembley already.

Pat Davies said: “We have been to Wembley twice and we want to make it third time lucky.”

Natalie, a qualified referee, said she had some concerns about the performance of the man in the middle and claimed the Shrews lost out on some key decisions.

She said: “You can’t always blame the ref but there were some decisions which should have gone our way and didn’t.”

There may be 16 coaches departing from the New Bucks Head today – but supporters are also heading north from all over the country.

“Wrekin College has got a full minibus and the Holiday Inn in Telford is sending one, too,” said chairman Lee Carter.

He added: “The support is incredible.”
