Not just a climbdown – an M&S climbdown

Friday 8th May 2009, 8:28AM BST.

POLITICS Gurkhas 174148First Joanna Lumley gives the Government what for, and then M&S  – facing an army of angry, well-endowed women looming over the horizon – does the sensible thing and drops its £2 big bra ‘tax’.

It’s enough to make Mrs Pankhurst proud.

Ms Lumley – still something of a New Avenger when it comes to the Gurkhas – ambushed the immigration minister yesterday.

She forced him to set out exactly what the Government was going to do over allowing former Gurkhas the right to live in Britain.

Poor old Phil Woolas. It must have been like being picked out by the headmistress at school assembly.

As for the bra issue, it’s been out talking point for the past few days and has attracted a number of comments. Click here to read more.

M&S said the extra material and extra engineering involved (engineering? I don’t imagine Brunel or Telford spent hours awake on that one) in making a larger bra meant it was justified in charging £2 more than it would for a smaller bra.

“Hang on a minute, that’s not fair,” said several thousand women. They got together internet petitions and rounded on M&S managers.

Those managers – sensibly enough – decided the game was up. “It’s clear we’ve got it wrong this time,” said M&S chief executive Sir Stuart Rose.

So, is this a new era we’re entering, one in which women call the shots and dictate policy?

It certainly seems so. Apparently ministers are even considering putting women in charge of the major banks – they’re less reckless than men, you see, not so at the mercy of testosterone.

As they say, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

And if you really want to make her angry, try and overcharge her for a bra.

Not axactly a new era or was the author born after 1990 and missed the shots being called by a grocer’s daughter from 1979 – 1990?

What’s next?? Different prices for different sized clothes – it may help reduce that waisteline though.

Christine: And why not? If there is an additional cost associated with stocking a low demand/low turnover item, then why shouldn’t the consumer who demands such an item pay?

If I went to a shop and ordered a bespoke pink washing machine, I would expect to pay more even though pink paint costs the same as white.

These women should be grateful that M&S stock their sizes rather than have to make a special order.

Great article. I hope to goodness there are no Lucys amongst the future leaders of our banks though or we’ll be back to square one in no time.

Yet another case of the vocal minority winning at the cost of the silent majority. Now everyone who does not have a large chest will be subsidising the few that do.

How long til the bra’s of all sizes go up…the corporates will win in the end, so the big busted women (of which I am one) will end up doing all women a dis-service by forcing prices up – their IQ’s are smaller than their bust size if they genuinely think everybody will end up paying lower prices.

As spoken by a true flat-chester.
