Fans to roar on Bucks

Friday 8th May 2009, 12:59PM BST.

rob-smith-2Boss Rob Smith believes AFC Telford United’s “Premier League” supporters can roar their side to promotion in tonight’s Blue Square North play-off final in Gateshead.

A travelling army of more than 1,000 fans is expected to make the 450-mile round-trip to the International Stadium for what is the biggest game in the short history of AFC Telford.

Sixteen coaches are heading up the M1 from the New Bucks Head, with hundreds more following in cars, as Smith’s side look for elevation into the top flight of non-League football.

“When myself and Lee (Carter, the club chairman) first spoke about it, I said we might get 500 up there,” said the Bucks chief.

“It now looks like 1,000-plus and it’s taken the wind out of our sails – the lads couldn’t believe it when we told them.

“I think there are some clubs in the Premier League who would not take as many fans this far on a Friday night.

“I’m sure there will be plenty of Geordies there, but it won’t be as intimidating for us – or for the referee – if our fans make as much noise.”

Smith cut a relaxed figure today ahead of departure for the north-east, insisting they had done everything they could to be ready for the big occasion.

“The two teams are very evenly matched and it will be won by who performs on the night,” he said.

“We couldn’t have prepared any more than we have and it’s going to be up to the boys now, I’ve just got to put my faith in them.

“They’ve not let me down in the big games and we all know we’re capable on our day.”

Promotion would complete a remarkable journey for AFC Telford, who were only formed in the summer of 2004, following the collapse of the old Telford United.

That club had been founder members of the league now known as the Blue Square Premier and had never been relegated until their sudden liquidation.

“Some of the fans who have been here long-term think it’s their rightful place,” added Smith.

“It’s not quite as simple as that in the real world, because we’re not the old Telford, we’re the new Telford.

“But if we can do it, it would cap an unbelievable season.”

Telford are without midfielders Phil Trainer (suspended) and Jon Adams (hamstring) tonight, but Smith is optimistic on three further injury doubts.

Defender Gavin Cowan, midfielder Liam Blakeman and striker Andy Brown are all carrying knocks but will be given until the latest possible stage to prove their fitness.

The tie will be decided tonight, with extra-time and penalties coming into play if necessary.

Chairman Lee Carter watched the semi-final victory over Alfreton with his fellow fans but will be back with the suits tonight.
