Watch out, Google’s about! (again)
Thursday 7th May 2009, 10:59AM BST.
The Google car which has sparked floods of complaints has returned to the county to film the streets and beauty spots of Shropshire.
The black car which boasts a 360-degree camera to film the UK for the Street View mapping site was first spotted at Priorslee Lake at 8.45am.
Stephen Kloda spotted the Google car near the lake as he travelled from his Wolverhampton home to work in Telford yesterday morning.
The 35-year-old, who is a software architect at Synetrix, based at the e-Innovation Centre at Wolverhampton University’s Telford campus, said: “I’ve seen the Google car in Wolverhampton driving past me a couple of times.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen it in Telford. It was just parked up in the layby by Priorslee Lake.”
But the car which was first seen touring the streets of the county last month has caused complaints from residents, including from people who reported it to police.
But Mr Kloda thinks the spy car is a good idea.
“I think Street View is fantastic, both from a user point of view and from a programmer’s point of view.
“I’d have no idea how to process such vast amounts of data as they do for the pictures and especially to make it so quick,” he added.
The vehicle was also spotted in Thornton Park Avenue, Muxton, yesterday morning.
But Google bosses have denied claims that the car invades people’s privacy.
Gareth Evans, Google spokesman, said: “We made sure we built in privacy measures from the ground up.”
Faces and number plates are blurred and users can flag images for removal.
