Jamie’s not backing out
Wednesday 6th May 2009, 1:48PM BST.
From a broken back to a play-off final in three months – that is the fairytale prospect driving AFC Telford United midfielder Jamie Vermiglio.
The 26-year-old was a surprise inclusion on the bench for the Bucks’ Blue Square North play-offs semi-final second leg at Alfreton on Sunday.
Having feared his career may be over last February, he came on as a sub to help the Bucks get over the winning line in a thrilling encounter, which they won 5-4 on aggregate.
Now he hopes he has done enough to stay in the squad for the big final at Gateshead on Friday evening as Telford look to seal their promotion.
“I was absolutely chuffed to be involved at Alfreton,” said Vermiglio.
“When the gaffer was reading the team sheet out I thought there was a chance because we were 2-0 up from the first leg and I thought he could put me in the squad to tighten things up late on.
“I was absolutely made up when he got to No 17 and read out my name, though.
“I know I’ve had a bad injury but you don’t become a bad player overnight and I’m sure I could do a job on Friday, too.
“Fingers crossed, I can keep myself involved for the final but I know the squad might change again. If he wants me I’m ready, but if I’m not selected I won’t be sulking.”
School teacher Vermiglio is also calling on the Telford fans to play their part in helping the side to one final victory.
He believes a vocal and positive away support could give the Bucks the edge for the biggest game in the club’s five-year history.
“I think Gateshead are the best footballing side we’ve played this year,” said Vermiglio.
“It will be a stern test but we will be well-prepared and I genuinely believe we’re the best team in the league.
“Our supporters can have a part to play and they were unbelievable at Alfreton.
“You hear all the cliches about the 12th man, but it really does make a difference. You hear them singing and it gets you that little bit more up for it.
“It gives you a confidence boost and a lift – we definitely needed that at Alfreton and we’ll need it again on Friday.”
