Car hit by airgun pellet

Wednesday 6th May 2009, 12:41PM BST.

police-lightsPolice today were hunting a gunman who fired an airgun pellet at a passing car in Powys. A black Volkswagen Golf was hit as it was driven along the A483 through Llanymynech.

No-one was hurt, but police said they were “relieved” the incident was not more serious.

The car door was damaged by the pellet shot from an airgun rifle.

Constable John Phillips said the incident happened on Monday, between 1.30pm and 1.45pm and was appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

“The car was shot at by an airgun rifle which was located opposite the disused Lion Hotel and church in the village,” he said.

“The pellet hit the driver’s door as he travelled in the direction from Oswestry to Welshpool and caused some minor damage such as scratches.

“This incident could have been much more serious and we are relieved nobody was injured and no major damage was caused.”

One villager, who declined to be named, said: “I am shocked to hear this and it must have been a worrying moment for the driver.

“You don’t think of things like this happening in Llanymynech and I hope whoever is responsible for it is caught and punished accordingly.

“Imagine if the shot hit the windscreen and shattered, it could have been a lot worse than it is.

“Generally Llanymynech is a quiet area and one of low crime and this is an unusual incident.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Phillips at Welshpool police station on 101.
