Teams register wins

cricketThe early season formbook was thrown out the window in the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League as the bottom three teams all registered their first victory of the season.

Broseley, Welshpool and Shelton all collected their first wins to dramatically tighten up the division.

Arguably the biggest shock came from Broseley who powered to a seven-wicket triumph over an Albrighton team which previously boasted a 100 per cent record.

Despite an unbeaten 49 from Gareth Hughes, Albrighton were dismissed for 144 with Phil Ashton claiming four wickets for the hosts.

And Mohammed Arshad and Mohammed Mehboob, who scored 66 and 47 respectively, ensured Broseley were home for the loss of just three wickets.

“We always fancy ourselves against most teams at home,” said Broseley captain Barry Hamer.

Welshpool got their first win on the board when easing to a seven wicket success over Allscott at Maesydre.

Newly promoted Allscott were skittled for just 68 in the 32nd over with Ian Pollard (21no) providing the only real resistance.

Sam Birch snapped up seven wickets for the Mid Wales side and fellow opening bowler Rob Birch claiming three victims.

Welshpool were struggling in reply with the loss of three early wickets, but Chris Owen, batting at five, saw them home with no further alarms by hitting exactly 50 in 56 balls.

Andy Wiggington claimed 5-11 for Shelton as they skittled Ludlow for just 75.

There were a few early alarms from the Shrewsbury side, but any nerves were calmed by an unbeaten 23 from Mattie Morris.

The surprises didn’t end there with Madeley also registering their first victory of the season over Wem.

Second team captain Chris Hodson, promoted after two fine performances with the bat, was the chief destroyer for Madeley as he claimed 5-9 with his slow left-arm spin to help dismiss Wem for 108.

And an unbeaten 60 from Steve Jones helped Madeley home for the loss of just one wicket.

“With the possible exception of Oswestry and Quatt it’s a wide open league,” said Madeley captain Jamie Lloyd.
