Student Sam wins county call-up

Tuesday 5th May 2009, 3:02PM BST.

postsShropshire have called up teenager Sam Bryne for their second game in this season’s RLF North Midlands Championship against Greater Birmingham at Kings Norton’s Hopwood ground tonight (7.30pm).

Bryne, 18, plays for Shrewsbury School as a full-back or centre and has been called into the squad as a replacement because Newport’s Matt Curgenven is unavailable this week.

Shropshire, who beat defending champions Worcestershire & Herefordshire 55-13 in their opening game last week, will secure their place in the final if they beat Greater Birmingham who will be playing the first game of the campaign.

The match has been switched to Kings Norton from the intended venue at Moseley because that ground is now unavailable.

The final group match between Worcestershire & Herefordshire and Greater Birmingham will be played at Droitwich’s Hanbury Road ground on May 12.

The final, between the top two teams in the group, will be played at Stourbridge’s Stourton Park ground on May 19, also with a 7.30pm kick-off.

The RLF North Midlands Championship is contested annually by the three Domestic Unions that comprise the North Midlands RFU and gives players from outside the National Leagues and those who do not play regular first team rugby at National Leagues rugby the opportunity to experience a high standard of representative rugby.
