Call over school closure bid meeting

Tuesday 5th May 2009, 11:01AM BST.

Campaigners against a proposal to shut a primary school near Oswestry are urging parents to attend a “critical” public meeting tomorrow to hear why council bosses want to close it.

Opponents against the plan to close Ysgol Pontfadog in the Ceiriog Valley say leading politicians will attend the talks at the school tomorrow and they have called for the community to also voice its opposition.

Wrexham Council officers will present their reasons for recommending the closure of the 100-year-old school at the 6pm meeting at the school.

Jools Payne, campaign chairman, said: “We are expecting significant support from all sections of the Ceiriog Valley community who have pledged to turn out in force to make their views known to Wrexham that their closure plan will not be accepted by this community.

“I would urge anyone who values the role our small schools play in knitting our communities together to come along to the meeting.

“I want everyone to know that they are welcome to join the meeting at any time. Whatever time people can get there is fine. What is most important is that people come along and voice their concerns.”

A barbecue tea is being provided by the school’s Parents Teachers Association.
