Action urged on car park boy racers
Tuesday 5th May 2009, 11:03AM BST.
Calls have been made for a crackdown on boy racers in Welshpool.
Welshpool Town Council has vowed to take action following problems at Maesydre car park, amid fears somebody could be killed.
Councillor Tony Squibb said young drivers had been meeting in the council-owned car park to race.
He said something would need to be done to address the problem before someone is killed.
He added that members would discuss the matter at the town council’s recreation committee meeting tomorrow at 8pm.
He said: “I attended a meeting in the grounds of Maesydre along with fellow councillors and found the car park was being used as a racing track.
“There were about five or six cars being driven in a very dangerous manner and I was very concerned.”
Robert Robinson, council clerk, said the registration numbers had been taken from two of the cars involved.
He said: “These plate numbers have now been passed onto the police.
“I think it’s fair to say we are not looking to prosecute, but those involved need to be warned about what they are doing.”
Dyfed-Powys Police said that anyone experiencing any problems with boy racers in the area should call them on 08453 302000.
