Fire-hit art shop ready to reopen

Monday 4th May 2009, 10:00AM BST.

An Oswestry shop which was forced to close for nearly two months after a fire broke out at the premises is set to reopen.

The Oswestry Framing Company in Leg Street is to open its doors for business again tomorrow following a major refurbishment.

It comes nearly two months after the blaze in the early hours of March 6, caused by an electrical fault, which destroyed four irreplaceable paintings and caused smoke damage to the premises.

The paintings were the work of Karl Robinson-Bray, a self-taught artist from Oswestry, who runs the Oswestry Framing Company.

He said: “We lost very little customer work. It was mainly smoke damage, there was very little fire damage.

“It set us back two months but hopefully our regular customers will return to us. We lost the tourist trade.

“We welcome all our customers again and we are sorry for all the inconvenience.

“We have regulars from Shrewsbury, Wrexham, Welshpool and Ruthin.

“People come all that way with their art work – it’s an inconvenience for them so we apologise for anything like that.”

Mr Robinson-Bray said the shop has been completed refitted. The ceilings have been brought down, new electrics have been fitted and the shop has been replastered and decorated.

He added: “I lost four of my own paintings. They are absolutely irreplaceable. Prints are still available of them.”
