Falconry fair off to a flying start

Monday 4th May 2009, 11:52AM BST.

Thousands of raptor enthusiasts are helping to mark the 20th anniversary of the annual British Falconry and Raptor Fair at Newport.

Organisers said the number of visitors who enjoyed the event at Chetwynd Park yesterday had beaten previous years and they hoped to attract up to 15,000 people over the two days as the entertainment continued today.

Ron Morris, spokesman for the event, said: “It looks as though the visitor numbers yesterday were well up on previous years.

“We usually have between 10,000 and 15,000 people over the weekend so it is looking good so far.”

And he said people enjoyed the sunshine yesterday but were braving the rain today.

“The weather plays a big part in all events and we were grateful for the sunshine yesterday. It’s not so nice today but people are already starting to come in and we are looking forward to another successful day,” he said.

Visitors enjoyed meeting the event’s star guest yesterday, TV star Jonathan Marshall, who is known for his many wildlife programmes.
