Battle on the bridge

Monday 4th May 2009, 11:53AM BST.

The Clun Green Man was set to do battle with the Frost Queen today to welcome spring into the south Shropshire valley.

Hundreds of visitors were expected to visit Clun for the last day of the annual three-day Green Man Festival.

The famous “battle on the bridge” was set to take place at noon followed by a procession through the town.

A traditional May Fair has been set up in the grounds of Clun Castle, with local craft stalls, demonstrating artisans, food stalls, and tea and beer tents.

Medieval sword fighting, maypole dancing, circus workshops, storytelling and duck racing will also be on show.
