Probe on charity’s financial records

Saturday 2nd May 2009, 11:05AM BST.

money-stackAn investigation has been launched by police following reports of alleged financial irregularities at a Shropshire volunteers’ charity, it has been revealed today.

West Mercia Police is conducting a probe after it received a complaint about financial issues associated with North Shropshire Voluntary Action.

The charity itself has contacted the Charity Commission over “financial difficulties” and the possible “misappropriation” of funds.

It came amid more gloom today for the county’s voluntary sector as it was announced that South Shropshire Voluntary Action is to voluntarily wind up with Voluntary Action Shrewsbury also set to close on May 29.

Volunteer support organisations in the county today said many charities were struggling due to the recession and said they would do all they could to help those in need.

A spokeswoman for the Charity Commission confirmed NSVA had reported an incident to the watchdog.

She said: “The Charity Commission has been contacted by North Shropshire Voluntary Action regarding financial difficulties at the charity and the possible misappropriation of funds.”

Maria Hawkaluk, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: “The complaint is being dealt with by north Shropshire CID.

“The investigation is ongoing and is in its early stages at this time.”

Nobody from NSVA was available for comment today.
