Premier big four all win on their travels

bowlsIt was the evening the big boys flexed their muscles and powered to away wins in the Furrows Shropshire Premier Bowls League, writes MALCOLM FLETCHER.

Leaders Castlefields, Chester Road, St Georges and Meole Brace all won on their travels last night, although Fields had just one shot to spare as they scraped in against plucky Childs Ercall 10-4.

Mark Holland, dropped to reserve for Shropshire’s county championship opener against the Potteries tomorrow led the way with a 21-8 card as the Roaders stunned Ifton 9-5 (agg 12).

Meole Brace, desperate to be considered title contenders, won 8-6 at Archibald Worthington, despite Les Markham’s 21-12 best return to action for the Whitchuch club.

And St Georges won a cracking game at promoted Bowring 8-6 (agg 12) thanks to mainly to big wins by Chris Halford (21-5) and Alan Palin (21-9).

Wem USC are second after blitzing the Bayley 13-1 (agg 74), Newport looked solid in seeing off Wrockwardine Wood 11-3 (agg 27) and Ford won their bottom of the table tussle with Bylet 10-4 (agg 60).

  • Preston Brockhurst’s Doubles Open on Bank Holiday Monday has been cancelled.
