Lack of takers surprises Candlin

Former Telford Tigers boss David Candlin is disappointed that so few want to take over the English Premier League ice hockey club – but he is still hopeful that new owners will be in place soon.
Candlin and new wife Rachel are quitting the sport after six years in charge at Telford as both are keen to pursue other personal and professional ambitions.
“When we first made it known we were stepping away, there were a number of groups and individuals who contacted us to find out more,” he said.
“We gave them all the information they needed about the club and its assets, to enable them to make an informed decision.
“Some of those have dropped out, but we are still talking to some interested parties. These are people with strong business or hockey backgrounds, who understand the sport and Telford Tigers’ place within it.
“To be honest, I was surprised there were not more groups coming forward. I expected a variety of business and fans consortiums to demonstrate an interest.”
Candlin stressed that it was not too late if there were any other groups or individuals keen to take over the team, but commented that the EPL officials will need to hear from new owners soon to enable them to confirm the make-up of the league in 2009-10.
A new owner will also have to move fast to secure players as there are already rumours of Tigers’ stars on the move.
Speculation places Tom Carlon in Peterborough, James Knight at Slough and Sam Zajac with Baskingstoke, while Davey Lawrence appears to be off too.
“Telford deserves to have an ice hockey team performing at the highest level possible – and the planned new ice rink could be the facility to bring Elite League hockey to Shropshire,” said Candlin.
“We know from last season that there is significant support from the local business community, and there is a ready-made network of volunteers who help to put the team on the ice.”
Any other companies or individuals interested in running the team are invited to email contact@telfordtigers.co.uk for further information.
