Karl chalks up Star KO win
Saturday 2nd May 2009, 12:30PM BST.
Thrilled Karl Dooris was today celebrating joining an elite band of Shropshire Star Snooker Knockout champions.
The 36-year-old from Whitchurch defeated Shrewsbury’s Callum Wraight 5-3 in last night’s final at Shifnal War Memorial Club. Dooris is the first player from Whitchurch to win the prestigious trophy.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic,” said the Irish-born cueman. “I don’t think Callum played as he could. To win a competition like this means everything.”
Dooris was backed by support from north Shropshire and his mother Maura who flew over from Ireland for her 60th birthday earlier in the week.
“It was great that Mom was here to see it,” added the champion.
For Wraight, defeat was a disappointing conclusion to the end of a campaign which saw him become Shrewsbury League champion for the second time, and defeat Shropshire Star holder Matt Davies in the semi-finals.
“I have been playing so well all season and then to put in a performance like that was heart-breaking,” he said.
