Change over mobile phone masts
Saturday 2nd May 2009, 11:02AM BST.
Telford & Wrekin Council is due to adopt new guidelines when deciding the controversial issue of mobile phone masts.
It follows huge concern among residents when telecommunications giants announce plans to install masts close to housing estates and playing fields.
Now the council cabinet, which meets on May 11, is set to spell out exactly which matters councillors should consider when applications are made for phone masts and radio equipment.
The big fear among many people is the potential danger from electromagnetic fields, although an official report commissioned by the Government has ruled out a general health risk.
Council head of planning Michael Barker said: “Concerns are often raised about the impact of masts in terms of visual impact and effect on residential areas.
“However, it is important to recognise we have to have effective telecommunications because this is a critical part of achieving a prosperous and healthy economy.”
