We owe Town fans – skipper
Friday 1st May 2009, 12:48PM BST.
Skipper Graham Coughlan believes Shrewsbury Town’s players “owe it to their supporters” to prolong the promotion dream tomorrow.
Only victory at Dagenham & Redbridge will be enough to take Town into the play-offs and within three games of returning to League One after a 12-year absence.
Shrewsbury followers have turned out in impressive numbers both at the Prostar Stadium and at various outposts around the country over the last nine months.
And Coughlan believes victory tomorrow will be a fitting reward for their loyalty.
“The supporters have been different class,” he said.
“You look back to when we had to play at Aldershot on a Tuesday night and at Gillingham on the Saturday (in March).
“And fans who turn out for two games like that in such a short space of time and have covered the miles they have covered deserve a little bit of success and we should put smiles on their faces.
“We owe it to them as well. Let’s be honest. We have let them down on several occasions this season away from home.
“It would be nice to turn around at the end of the game and say ‘there you go, that’s for you. That’s the reward for sticking by us and sticking together’.”
Coughlan admitted the game can’t come around quickly enough for Town’s expectant players, and is confident there will be enough in the away dressing room to complete their job.
“We wish the game was here now,” added the 34-year-old.
“We are like little kids on Christmas Eve and we know what we have got to do. It’s now time for the talking to go away and the balls to come out.
“It’s the talk of the town everywhere you go and we know we have got a lot of people depending on us.
“But you want to be in these positions up challenging. You don’t want to be mid-table or fighting for survival.
“It’s a big day, with big players and big fans and a big football club needs to stand up and everyone needs to answer the call.”

Thanks for the thought Graham, but I think a couple of away wins earlier in the season would have been a better reward. I wont hold my breath for Saturday if you don’t mind!
