Inquiries into fire continue

Friday 1st May 2009, 10:57AM BST.

Investigations were continuing today into the cause of a blaze involving 100 tonnes of recycled rubber at a north Shropshire industrial estate.

The fire at Kingpin Tyres Ltd in Wem Industrial Estate began on Wednesday at about 11.20pm and took several hours to be doused by a 15-strong team of firefighters.

Phil Smith, watch manager with Wem fire station, said the incident was the latest in a spate of “suspicious” fires around the firm’s industrial unit.

He said today: “Fire investigators have been out there yesterday afternoon and are now deciding what the next move should be.

“A fire service representative is due to meet company bosses next week to discuss the best way forward.”

Maria Hawkaluk, West Mercia Police spokeswoman, said today: “Police have been informed by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service about the fire.

“At this stage it’s just for information but there might be further contact between police and fire service if they request our assistance.”
