Bosses reject criticism over street traders
Friday 1st May 2009, 10:22AM BST.
Shropshire Council bosses today rejected claims that the granting of street trading licences to stallholders on Oswestry’s Bailey Street was detrimental to the town’s outdoor market.
The move has been condemned by Oswestry Town Council which runs the market in Bailey Head.
Town council chiefs fear the permission to three stallholders to trade in Bailey Street has led to “fragmentation” of the market and may have contravened its historic market rights.
But Shropshire Council bosses said today they believed the stalls in Bailey Street will actually attract shoppers to the market.
Shropshire Council spokesman Gareth Proffitt said: “No market rights apply in Bailey Street – street trading consent applies instead, and each of the three individual licences was only issued once we were satisfied that the applicants met the appropriate criteria for street traders.
“However, we believe that the issuing of these individual licences will help to attract shoppers to both Bailey Street and to Bailey Head market.
“Applications from the traders were received following a decision by Oswestry Town Council in January to cancel its own licence, which gave it consent for up to 10 stalls in Bailey Street.”
Town council mayor Gareth Jones said: “We are disappointed the decision was taken.
“Our experiment over 18 months to have stalls in Bailey Street attracted criticism from other traders and retailers.”
