Huge blaze at DIY store
Thursday 30th April 2009, 12:18PM BST.
Firefighters battled for nearly two hours today to prevent a huge blaze destroying a Shropshire store.
The fire, which is thought to have been started deliberately, broke out just after midnight in a storeroom at the back of the Homebase DIY store, Salop Road, Oswestry.
Nobody was injured in the fire but the store was closed today and police officers sealed off access to the rear of the shop to await the arrival of scene of crime officers.
Adrian Bowen, of Oswestry fire station, said: “It was a severe fire which caused extensive damage to the storeroom.
“Smoke also spread to the main store. We initially thought it was a false alarm and the automatic fire alarm was going off, but while we were going there, control called to say they had received a number of calls from the public confirming there was definitely a fire.
“Thanks to the public we were prepared for a fire and if we had not got there when we did the whole store could have been lost.
“The police are involved and the fire is of doubtful origin.”
Maria Hawkaluk, police spokeswoman, said: “Police are investigating the cause of the fire and working with the fire service.”
