Callum aims to bowl snooker world over
Thursday 30th April 2009, 3:31PM BST.
The unique opportunity of becoming a county champion in two different sports in the same year is the driving inspiration behind Callum Wraight’s quest to become Shropshire Star Snooker Knockout champion tomorrow night.
One of the elite crown green bowlers in Shropshire and well-established on the national competition scene, Wraight will be one of the favourites to land the Shropshire Star Merit later this summer.
But he has proved himself equally as adept on the green baize as he is on the bowling green with a stunning run to the final of the prestigious snooker championship.
He will meet Whitchurch’s Karl Dooris in the final at Shifnal War Memorial Club tomorrow as he chases part one of a famous double.
“To win both of them in the same year would be a dream but there’s a long way to go yet so it’s not something I’m thinking too much about,” said Wraight, who had snooker lessons from Telford professional Adrian Gunnell as a 15-year-old and is a twice Shrewsbury League champion.
“I have never played Karl but I know he is a good player and I have a lot of respect for him.
“If I turn up and play as I can, I know I have got a good chance.”
Regardless of the result, Wraight plans to try his luck in a string of amateur tournaments at Pontin’s in Prestatyn next season.
Dooris, who lived in Crewe before moving to Shropshire around five years ago, is no stranger to big matches after playing in a handful of pro-am events in the past.
He reached a final of one in Preston where he lost 4-2 to professional Ian McCulloch, who is a twice world ranking finalist including in the Grand Prix at Telford in 2002.
But Dooris insists victory tomorrow night would be the highlight of his 20 years in snooker.
“It’s the biggest game I have ever played and to win it would mean the world to me,” said the 36-year-old, who has lost just one game for the Raven in the Whitchurch League all season.
“I have played in Crewe and in the Liverpool League and the standard of player in Shropshire is much higher than I have ever played against before.
“To win the county championship against that standard of player would mean everything.”
Dooris, however, is respectful of Wraight, having watched the end of his dramatic 4-3 victory over defending champion Matt Davies on semi-final night.
“He is a good player and is certainly an excellent potter,” added the Whitchurch cueman ahead of tomorrow’s best-of-nine encounter which gets underway at 7.30pm.
