Dagenham spells D-Day
Wednesday 29th April 2009, 12:52PM BST.
Kelvin Langmead today summed up the magnitude of Shrewsbury Town’s play-off shoot-out at Dagenham on Saturday by declaring: “It’s one of the biggest games of our careers.”
Town’s season goes on the line at Victoria Road where they must collect all three points to leapfrog their final weekend opponents and climb into the top seven.
Langmead is one of the survivors of the Town squad which reached Wembley in the play-offs two years ago before suffering a final defeat to Bristol Rovers.
But the defender insists Saturday represents one of the most important dates of his career – and that of many of his team-mates.
“It’s huge. You look through the dressing room and for some of the lads it will be one of the biggest games of their careers and I’m no different,” he said.
“The implications of winning it and going on are huge for this football club and huge for us as players.
“You looked six weeks ago and the last game was always going to be crucial and it has proven to be so.
“We know what our job is now. We understand they can draw and that might benefit us.
Striker
“In the back of their minds, they will be thinking ‘we have to make sure we don’t lose the game.’
“That will give us impetus to push on and attack. We have got nothing to lose – we have to go there and win.”
Meanwhile, striker James Constable has completed his permanent move to Oxford.
The Blue Square Premier outfit claimed they had sealed a deal last month for a forward who has scored 25 goals in all competitions during a season-long loan.
Shrewsbury officials rejected that at the time but have now confirmed they have agreed to the switch.
Town reserves wrapped up the Central League Division One title yesterday with a 2-0 success at Mansfield.
Kevin McIntyre played an hour of the game to put himself in contention for a recall after fully recovering from a broken leg.

Have I missed something? I thought town were trying to drag themselves into a playoff position. To hear stfc talking you would think that they were in a cup final on Saturday.
I’m thinking towns chances are slim to none for saturday anyway. Let’s not forget that town haven’t played well enough this season to earn a stab playoffs anyway. The league 2 table is not an accurate reflection of the season because of point deductions elsewhere. Town have played like a mid table team all season and if there is any justice, that’s where they will finish!

And you have seen enough games to know this?
I have been to every game, home and away, and can tell you if anything we have deserved more reward for our performances.
Our home record is ‘division winning’ form, it is only our away form that has let us down and if you analyse that we have drawn more away than we have lost.
Over the past few months we have put in performances deserving of victory away at Gillingham, Aldershot, Bury & Wycombe yet drew them all.
Town have not played like a mid-table team all season, until a couple of months ago we were favourites to go up outright.
Our inability to convert draws into victories has cost us dearly but should we get in the Play-Off’s I am convinced we will win them.

Block 16 – im really happy to hear that ‘drawsbury’ towns home form was so good. Maybe one day the FA will stop taking away results into account and in that glorious day town may finish in the top half of the table.
