Man on trial for student’s murder
Tuesday 28th April 2009, 3:32PM BST.
The trial began today of a Telford man accused of murdering a teenage student who was tied to a tree and forced to drink fuel before being set alight.
Jonathan Clarke, 19, has denied murdering Simon Everitt in Great Yarmouth between June 6 and 29 last year.
The Crown Prosecution Service was due to open its case at Norwich Crown Court this afternoon after the jury was sworn in.
Clarke, of Queen Elizabeth Way, Malinslee, is jointly accused with Jimi-Lee Stewart, 25, and 40-year-old Maria Chandler, both of Great Yarmouth, who are also charged with Mr Everitt’s murder. They also deny murder.
The three only spoke to confirm their names this morning. Their trial is expected to last four weeks.
Clarke is alleged to have been involved in the death of Mr Everitt, an engineering student, while he lived in Great Yarmouth before he moved to Shropshire.
Mr Everitt was last seen alive on June 6 riding his bike through Great Yarmouth.
