Keepers in frame for county
Tuesday 28th April 2009, 10:22AM BST.
Shropshire have unveiled the squad they hope will get their Minor Counties season off to the perfect squad as they start a fresh bid for a first piece of silverware in 36 years.
A 12-man party has been selected for the visit of Bedfordshire to Shrewsbury on Sunday for the opening game of the round-robin qualifying group in the Minor Counties Trophy.
James Ralph will again lead the side this term, while the squad includes two specialist wicket-keepers, Shifnal’s Anthony Parker and Matt Tilt of St Georges.
Ralph has hinted that Tilt will don the gloves, with Parker playing as a specialist batsman.
Professional Andy Gray, explosive batsman Atiq Chishti – formerly Atiq-ur-Rehman – and all-rounder Duncan Catterall are also named.
Shrewsbury pair Rob Foster and Mike Barnard are both unavailable.
Full squad: James Ralph (Kidderminster, captain), Ed Foster (Shrewsbury, vice-captain), Atiq Chishti (Knowle & Dorridge), Duncan Catterall (Ombersley), Jono Whitney (Bridgnorth), Anthony Parker, Adam Shimmons (both Shifnal), Andy Gray, Jack Shantry (both Walsall), Steve Taylor, Matt Tilt (both St Georges), Bruce Thomason.

Another season and somethings never change-
poor weather at the start of the cricket season, and a combination of hope and nepotism amongst the poor relations of minor counties and league cricket.
Once again we see half the side representing teams from outside of the county and surnames familiar to the Shropshire cricket watcher of the 1980′s.
When will Shropshire cricket officals ever learn- a woefully poor youth set up harnessed by the county’s Cricket Clubs, favouring certain schools and a certain ‘type’.
If the county’s cricket league really encompassed the county and it’s environs, and it’s teams had a structure based on ability and potential rather than background and family, then Shropshire County Cricket Club may just have a shout.
