Flu fears weigh on FTSE 100
Tuesday 28th April 2009, 9:23AM BST.
Fears of a flu pandemic weighed on the FTSE 100 in early trading, which fell 2.31 per cent by 08:45 BST.
British Airways shares continued to fall this morning, and were down 2.31 per cent following yesterday’s 7.75 per cent slump.
But it was the financial and mining sectors that were leading the decline on the index this morning.
Property firm Liberty International fell 8.54 per cent, while Xstrata was 7.67 per cent lower and Eurasian Natural Resources dropped 6.93 per cent.
Few stocks were out of the red, and by 09:00 BST just GlaxoSmithKline and Associated British Foods were trading higher, by 0.66 per cent and 2.04 per cent.
The Dow Jones and the S&P 500 were also lower overnight, after reports that Bank of America and Citigroup may need more capital.
