Complaints over club noise
Tuesday 28th April 2009, 11:00AM BST.
An investigation has been launched by environmental health bosses after claims were made that loud music from a Shrewsbury town centre club is keeping nearby residents awake.
Shropshire Council officers have received complaints about noise at The Bedroom in Mardol. But bosses at TCG Acquisitions, which owns the club, claim that they are not aware of any recent complaints.
The firm is in negotiations to sell the property.
David Winslow, who lives in the Nexus apartment block in town, said the noise was too much for residents to deal with.
He said: “They have a music licence which requires them to reduce the volume of the music at 11pm.”
Mr Winslow claimed environmental health inspectors had carried out tests of the noises but have always told the club about it so the noise levels were low.
“Last week, the music was really loud and we can live with that until 11pm as we stay in our lounge.
“But there was no reduction in volume come 11pm. It went on until about 12.05am. It is horrifyingly loud and the DJ is shouting above the noise. It really keeps you on edge,” he said.
Mr Winslow said he and his wife like to sleep with the window open but even if they close it, they can still hear the noise. “We agree we chose town centre living and we would get noise from the street and we prepared to live with that but not booming music at midnight. It is just unreasonable,” he said.
Gareth Proffitt, of Shropshire Council, said: “We have received complaints about noise at The Bedroom and the council’s environmental health officers are currently investigating these complaints.”
A spokesman for TCG Acquisitions said: “We were contacted by the local authorities in November last year regarding a noise complaint in relation to Bedroom in Shrewsbury.
“We have not been contacted on the matter since then. We are actively marketing Bedroom and have been in discussions with a number of parties.”
