Town down to the wire

shrewsnewlogotm5After 45 games of a gruelling season, Town’s promotion hopes have come down to the wire. They need a win on the final day of the season to reach the playoffs, writes Shrewsbury blogger James Pugh.

Although the 0-0 result at home to Lincoln was met with some disappointment at the final whistle, a win would still have meant needing a victory at Dagenham next week after they comfortably beat Notts County.

Lincoln were certainly there for the taking. We had chances early on to win the game but lacked quality in the final third, which meant we had to settle for a draw.

Unusually, Grant Holt missed two great chances with only the keeper to beat.

The defence were certainly the stand out performers, although it was the attackers we needed to have good games. Yet again I was frustrated with the performances of Leslie and Humphreys who didn’t offer enough on the wings.

Whether it was nerves or the pressure, Town were far from their best, despite showing a lot of effort to win the game.

Lincoln didn’t have anything to play for and you could tell by the way they went about the game. On any other day, if the situation had been different, we could have comfortable won the game 3-0.

You couldn’t really fault the way Simpson went about the game as he started with an attacking line-up. One thing that I did find strange though was he went with three upfront in the second half in search of a winner, despite a draw being enough.

There were a couple of worrying moments towards the end of the game and if Lincoln had pinched a winner, our promotion dream would have been over.

Considering it could possibly be our final home game of the season, I was a little surprised that the majority of the large crowd rushed to get home, meaning no traditional end of season lap of honour from the players thanking the fans for their support.

I wonder if that means the fans expect to be seeing Town at home again in the playoffs?

So, one game to go, one win needed – what is the feeling amongst the fans about beating Dagenham next week? My prediction: Town to win 2-1 and from then on who knows what may happen in the rollercoaster that is the playoffs?

One thing in our favour next week is that we know what we have to do.

Dagenham have got a dilemma on their hands: play for a draw or go in all guns blazing like they have done for much of the season.
