Theatre linked to traffic woes

Friday 24th April 2009, 2:20PM BST.

Motorists are facing long delays in Shrewsbury because of snarl-ups caused by traffic getting to the events at the town’s new theatre, it has been claimed.

Investigations are under way over concerns motorists are stuck in queues for up to 30 minutes in the Frankwell area.

Theatre-goers and Frankwell residents have complained to Shropshire Council about traffic jams and roads they claim are almost blocked by parked cars.

Former borough councillor Judith Williams, who lives in Frankwell, said the problems were getting worse.

“It is not unusual to sit in the queue on the Frankwell car park waiting for 30 minutes,” she said. “Theatre-goers are getting wise and getting into our residential areas at the top of Mountfields to avoid using the car park.

“Residents have to join this long line of traffic and it is unacceptable.”

Shropshire Council spokesman Simon Alton said traffic light timings had been altered to improve traffic flow but the area may be looked at again.

Is this in any way surprising? Nope! Should development control have thought about this? Yes

Off the subject a little, but I saw many people on the terraces of the theatre enjoying drinks two Saturdays ago, whilst there was fighting along Smithfield road between many people, what must people think?? when is there going to be an end to this? or how can can we put an end to this.

    Well according to http://www.shrewsbury-atcham.gov.uk/public/council/committees/dcandep/default.htm
Mrs Williams was the chairman of Development Control, so who is she blaming? Surely not a politician accepting responsibility.

How can someone be prevented from parking a taxed and insured car on the public road provided it is not causing an obstruction to emergency vehicles? Bunch of NIMBYs.

Simon I think that you’ve answered your own question, they’re nimbys. They seemed to be all too welcome with regeneration when they could see their house prices may gain but for every positive there must be a negative to keep things in check.

I suspect that the new administration will blame the old and as Cilla would say Surprise, Surprise! The same old guard will be there doing their utmost to get their faces in the paper or their monotonous monotone monologues on the local radio. The King is dead, long live the King!
