Lloyd to be a TV hit

Friday 24th April 2009, 1:32PM BST.

boxer-mark-lloyd1Boxer Mark Lloyd tonight faces the biggest fight of his career with the aim of emulating Richie Woodhall in bringing a major belt to Shropshire.

Shifnal-based Lloyd meets unbeaten Jamie Cox in a British welterweight title eliminator at Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall tonight on a bill which will be covered by Sky.

The winner is guaranteed a shot at the British title against either current champion Kell Brook or Young Mutley.

Shropshire boxers have struggled to win major belts since the retirement of former WBC super middleweight champion Woodhall.

But now Lloyd is keen to give the county’s boxing fans – around 200 of whom will be roaring on the 33-year-old – a night to remember.

“I was the first Telford boxer to win a title since Richie and I want to make it a British title now,” said Lloyd, who has won 12 and lost two ahead of his meeting with former Commonwealth Games gold medalist Cox.

“I honestly believe I will do it now. The nerves are gone and I just can’t wait for it to start.

“I’ve got to keep the pressure up but it has to be educated pressure.”

Lloyd weighed in at 10st 8lbs 8ozs yesterday, with Cox – from the Frank Warren stable – tipping the scales at 10st 8lbs 12ozs.
