Council to boost spending on roads
Friday 24th April 2009, 11:40AM BST.
Telford & Wrekin Council is to spend an extra £3 million to repair crumbling roads and footpaths after a “people power” campaign by cyclists and pensioners.
Potholes, badly patched up roads and uneven pavements are among the top bugbears in the borough.
Telford & Wrekin Senior Citizens’ Forum, which is carrying out a survey on the effectiveness of speed humps, has called for urgent improvements to roads and footpaths.
And cyclists have highlighted problems with potholes in the Telford area, urging people to report them to a national hotline at www.fillthathole.org.uk
Council leader Andrew Eade said: “We believe in genuine consultation and have changed our budget accordingly to take on board people’s views.”
Councillors would be looking to bring forward up to £3 million extra to improve roads and footpaths, on top of funds already earmarked, he said.
Councillor Stephen Bentley, cabinet member for environment, said: “Local people have told us that improving roads and footpaths is one of their top priorities and we are now looking to respond to this.”
The council’s Conservative leadership is also planning to allocate a further £2 million to its Borough Towns Initiative, again responding to what local people want.
This will go towards regenerating Oakengates and the proposed £8 million creation of a civic quarter in Wellington.

It’s about time they did something about this, I’m constantly trying to avoid potholes.
The Sainsbury’s retail park should look at doing something there too, some patches on there are more like the moon’s surface than roads.

I am a little confused as to why TELFORD is paying (Telford Council Tax payers I mean) when all you drivers pay a huge amount of ROAD TAX per year to maintain the roads. Surely the government isn’t being dishonest and using your road tax for other things?
Bet you’re all going to phone your MP and ask the question, or are you going to be walked all over yet again?
