Building supplies firms axed

Friday 24th April 2009, 10:40AM BST.

job_centre3Two building supplies outlets on a shared site in Telford are to close with the loss of up to 11 jobs, it was revealed today.

Both the Plumb Center and the Build Center on the Stafford Park industrial estate will shut on May 1.

The closures are part of nationwide cutbacks announced by the parent company, Wolseley UK, last November in response to tough trading conditions.

A spokeswoman for Wolseley UK said: “We can confirm that Plumb Center and Build Center’s shared site in Telford will close on May 1. Regrettably, 11 roles are impacted by the closure.

“In November 2008 Wolseley announced headline plans for some 2,000 job losses and around 200 branch closures or consolidations as part of the focus on improving efficiencies and reducing costs and duplication in light of the unprecedented market conditions.

“The closure in Telford is part of the programme announced in November.

“We fully realise our responsibilities to all individuals affected by this restructure and are consulting with them to ensure that they are dealt with in a fair and sensitive way.”

The spokeswoman said existing orders would be honoured and customers were being referred to nearby branches.

The Stafford Park complex opened in 1994 after the Build Center moved from Priorslee Industrial Estate.
