Vermiglio raring to get back on pitch
Thursday 23rd April 2009, 12:08PM BST.
Jubilant Jamie Vermiglio is aiming to force his way into AFC Telford United’s play-off plans – by starring on his long-awaited comeback.
The 26-year-old midfielder has not played since February, when he was diagnosed with a broken back and a slipped disc.
But he will pull on a white shirt once again for Saturday’s clash with Blue Square North champions Tamworth, following an epidural injection to ease the pain and begin the healing process.
Vermiglio was promised at least 45 minutes by boss Rob Smith after the Bucks sealed their play-off place with Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Burscough.
Now he is planning to try and prove he could yet have a part to play in the promotion race over the next fortnight.
“The main intention is just to have a run-out because we need to rest a few players,” he admitted.
“But I’m looking to put in a half-decent performance and give the manager something to think about.
“I can’t expect to be involved in the play-offs because the lads who have been playing have done well in my position, but that won’t stop me trying.”
Just to be back on the pitch at all is something which seemed impossible until recently, with the primary school teacher facing the nightmare prospect of having to retire.
“It’s a bit different from a few months ago, when I was told I should never play football again,” he said.
“It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster season and it would be nice to finish it on a high. It will be even better if we win the play-offs.
“It will be a big buzz for me to get out there in front of the fans again – they’ve been brilliant to me.”
l Supporters will be able to vote for their player of the year at Saturday’s game against Tamworth. Voting slips and boxes will be located around the ground and in the Learning Centre.
The winning player will receive their trophy at the 2009 awards evening on Saturday, May 16.
